Cet article propose l’analyse de quelques chapitres du Monologion d’Anselme de Canterbury (1033-1109) qui traitent de la création ex nihilo. L’auteur y démontre que le Dieu créateur est une cause uniquement efficiente, et non matérielle, de sa création ; il n’y a donc pas de cause autre qu’efficiente au passage du non-être à l’être, le devenir n’a pas de cause matérielle. La création n’est pas un engendrement, ni l’action conjointe de deux principes (la puissance et la matière, par exemple), mais (...) l’acte efficient d’un être qui n’a besoin d’aucune autre cause que lui-même pour créer son autre. La théorie anselmienne de la création est ensuite située dans l’histoire générale de la causalité ; ignorant la quadripartition aristotélicienne des causes, Anselme développe, pour les besoins de la compréhension théologique, une théorie binaire fondée sur l’efficience et ses adjuvants. Or il semble que cette conception de la causalité puisse trouver sa source dans le stoïcisme cicéronien. Par ailleurs, elle a pu elle-même constituer un modèle ontologique pour la conception mécaniste de la cause à l’âge classique, en définissant la cause comme ce qui est au principe de l’existence de l’effet, plutôt qu’un principe explicatif formel ou final. Depuis une vingtaine d'années, on assiste en France à un vaste mouvement d'initiatives féminines citoyennes que l'on peut qualifier d'espaces de médiation. Leur point commun est de créer, souvent en partenariat avec les collectivités locales, des espaces de proximité visant à résoudre les problèmes vécus au quotidien par les femmes et leurs familles. À partir d'exemples concrets, nous montrons que ces espaces de proximité sont susceptibles d'aider les femmes à acquérir une certaine autonomie à condition qu'ils reposent sur une double (...) médiation: médiation entre les pôles de l'individuel et le collectif, ce qui permet à chacune d'être reconnue dans sa singularité tout en appartenant à un collectif; médiation entre l'intérêt collectif du groupe et l'intérêt général, le groupe devenant ainsi une sorte d'intermédiaire vers la société civile.A vast movement of citizen-based initiatives led by women has emerged in France over the last twenty years or so and these can be qualified as providing mediation programmes. These projects are often run in partnership with local governments and generally have in common the fact that they are community initiatives aimed at helping women and their families solve day-to-day problems. Using real examples, we show that these community programmes can help women acquire a certain autonomy as long as they are based on a dual mediation, firstly mediation between poles of the individual and the collective and secondly mediation between the collective interest of the group and the general interest, the group thus acting as a sort of intermediary towards society as a whole. Ces deux ouvrages rendent hommage et restituent la pensée plurielle de Françoise Collin (1928-2012), philosophe, écrivaine et féministe belge, ayant vécu en France et essaimé en Europe. Publiés dans un contexte similaire, ils visent néanmoins des objectifs différents. Le premier, Françoise Collin. L’insurrection permanente d’une pensée discontinue (abr. IP), caractérisé par son ampleur, entend reconstruire, selon les termes de l’auteure, la pensée complexe et « discontinue » de la philosophe...

Au premier degré, cette étude se lit comme une réflexion sur le concept de méthode. L'examen des textes cartésiens permet de dégager les caractères de la méthode , mais surtout ce qu'on peut appeler son « esprit ». Il tient tout entier, semble-t-il, dans la découverte - qui vaut invention - de la fécondité du principe : la pensée élaborée, en effet, aperçoit d'un même mouvement l'homogénéité du principe et de la fin, d'une part, l'homologie entre la pensée et l'Être, (...) d'autre part. À un niveau plus profond, la transcendance de la méthode par rapport à ses règles conduit, dans un premier temps, à l'identifier avec la philosophie elle-même - appréhendée ici comme « commentaire de son principe » - dans un second temps à marquer, sous le rapport du modèle, la différence entre la philosophie et les sciences.As far as the literal meaning is concerned, this study can be read as a reflection on the concept of the method. The perusal of Descartes's texts allows to bring out the characteristics of the method , but especially what may be called its "spirit". It entirely lies, so it seems, in the discovery - which is as good as invention - of the potential of the principle : indeed, elaborate thought straightaway perceives the homogeneity of the principle and of the end, on the one hand, the homology between thought and Being, on the other hand. As far as the hidden meaning is concerned, the transcendence of the method with regard to its rules leads first to identify it with philosophy itself - in this instance considered as a "commentary on its principle" - subsequently to lay stress, from the point of view of the model, on the difference between philosophy and sciences. Dans cet article, nous présentons le corpus « Multicultural Paris French » (MPF), en en montrant les enjeux théoriques et méthodologiques, ainsi que quelques directions d’exploitation. En visant des données non-standard illustrant ce qu’il est de coutume d’appeler « parler jeune », MPF repose sur une réflexion quant à la façon d’appréhender les situations propices à leur émergence, au-delà d’informations généralement retenues, d’ordres sociodémographiques ou ethniques, ou du degré de formalisme de l’échange. Si ces considérations ne sont évidemment pas évacuées, (...) elles sont combinées à d’autres qui concernent les effets de la relation entre locuteurs au moment de l’enregistrement. De ce fait, MPF apparaît comme un corpus original dans le champ des corpus de français parlé contemporain, tant du point de vue de la nature des données recueillies que de celui du traitement rendu possible par cette spécificité. In this work we develop a discussion that seeks to clarify and substantiate the thesis that the late medieval voluntarism, mainly that of Duns Scotus, is a factor whose consideration is essential to understand the origin of modern thought and its drift in a culture of freedom and innovation as ends in themselves. By voluntarism we understand the conception of the divine and also human will as a power that determines itself in its act and that, in this particular sense, (...) is absolutely free, since it does not recognize any other influence beyond itself. Both the act of will and its effect are then understood as an entirely new and original product. We carry out a critical analysis of this voluntarism based on the texts of Scotus and other medieval authors, and a historical-philosophical analysis of its possible influence on the evolution of modern philosophy. The origin of Modernity is a problem often neglected in current debate, and several landmarks are often suggested, such as the new science, the Renaissance, Descartes philosophical approach or the Illustration. In this paper it is suggested that the roots of Modernity could pre-date those conventional landmarks, and could be found in the great political and cultural conflicts that occurred in Europe in the Low Middle Age.

Human beings adapt the spontaneous pace of their actions to interact with the environment. Yet, the nature of the mechanism enabling such adaptive behavior remains poorly understood. The aim of the present contribution was to examine the role of attention in motor timing using time series analysis, and a dual task paradigm. In a series of two studies, a finger-tapping task was used in sensorimotor synchronization with various tempi and motor complexity. Time series analyzes indicated that two different timing strategies (...) were used depending on the speed constraints. At slow tempi, tapping sequences were characterized by strong negative autocorrelations, suggesting the implication of cognitive predictive timing. When moving at fast and close-to-spontaneous tempi, tapping sequences were characterized by less negative autocorrelations, suggesting that timing properties emerged from body movement dynamics. The analysis of the dual-task reaction times confirmed that both the temporal and spatial constraints impacted the attentional resources allocated to the finger-tapping tasks. Overall, our work suggests that moving fast and slow involve distinct timing strategies that are characterized by contrasting attentional demands. (shrink)

Poursuite d'un projet déjà instauré avec "Le véritable secret de Nostradamus" (1971), ce livre esquisse le bilan actuel où un syncrétisme inhérent à la Tradition qu'il suppose ne nuit pas au sérieux des réflexions de l'auteur.

Clinical ethics consultants respond to a multitude of issues, ranging from the cognitive to the emotional. As such, ethics consultants must be prepared to analyze as well as empathize. And yet, there remains a paucity of research and training on the interpersonal and emotional aspects of clinical ethics consultations—the so-called skills in “advanced ethics facilitation.” This article is a contribution to the need for further understanding and practical knowledge in the emotional aspects of ethics consultation. Este artículo revisa la situación de la teoría filosófica del conocimiento en la segunda mitad del siglo XX y el aporte de L. Polo a la misma. Se considera la importancia del aporte de L. Polo al realismo gnoseológico que se ha ido abriendo paso en esta época postmoderna, después de los excesos del criticismo inmanentista moderno. Se destacan dos aspectos relevantes de la teoría del conocimiento de L. Polo: a) su propuesta de una versión realista, no husserliana-cartesiana, de la (...) intencionalidad cognitiva como intencionalidad del objeto respecto a la realidad objetivada y no como relación del acto al objeto, y b) su aporte a la superación del criticismo inmenentista moderno mediante la identificación y revisión de sus orígenes tardomedievales en el representacionismo semántico de Ockham y en el representacionismo especulativo de Duns Escoto. Open peer commentary on the article “A Computational Constructivist Model as an Anticipatory Learning Mechanism for Coupled Agent–Environment Systems” by Filipo Studzinski Perotto. Upshot: Constructivist theory gives a nice high-level account of how knowledge can be autonomously developed by an agent interacting with an environment, but it fails to detail the mechanisms needed to bridge the gap between low levels of sensorimotor data and higher levels of cognition. AI workers are trying to bridge this gap, using task-specific engineering approaches, without (...) any principled theory to guide them; they could use help from psychologists. (shrink)

Before he recognized the role of the Tradition in the Church, Newman rooted his life in the Bible, memorizing the King James Version. He commented on it throughout his life. This essay canvasses Newman’s reading of the Fourth Gospel, and brings to light the theology of the word presupposed by Newman’s interpretation of Scripture.

Clinical ethics consultants often confront the most difficult clinical encounters, typically in the setting of chronically critically ill patients and surrogate decision makers. These encounters require not only analytical skills but interpersonal skills as well. In this article, I focus on an interpersonal skill absent from the American Society for Bioethics and the Humanities Task Force’s Core Competencies for Healthcare Ethics Consultation. I introduce the psychoanalytic concept of transference and argue that knowledge and use of transference phenomena are sometimes indispensable (...) for ethics consultation with surrogate decision makers. For solicitation of moral views, disclosure of relevant beliefs and values, and identification of the central ethical question—essential to assessment and analysis—cannot at times begin without recognition and working through of transference. A partir de l’étude d’un corpus de travaux de géographes en français et en anglais depuis les années 1990, l’article est consacré à la manière dont les études géographiques portant sur les espaces dits des Suds, entendus comme faisant partie des pays dominés à l’échelle mondiale, intègrent la notion de mondialisation. Le constat de la faible prise en compte des pays des Suds dans les études portant sur la mondialisation est d’abord établi. En réaction, nombre de géographes concernés ont intégré (...) cette dimension dans leurs travaux pour montrer ce qu’était la mondialisation depuis les Suds et qu’il s’agissait d’un phénomène bien réel dont ils n’étaient pas exclus. Les travaux sont souvent orientés idéologiquement, les uns développant des approches critiques de la mondialisation, dans la filiation d’études marxistes et tiers-mondistes, les autres insistant au contraire sur les conséquences bénéfiques de la mondialisation pour les pays des Suds. La plupart convergent cependant pour considérer que la mondialisation accentue les inégalités sociales et spatiales, assertion qui est ici à la fois considérée puis soumise à discussion. (shrink)

Ivo of Chartres (1040–1115) offers a case study about how objects – ivories in particular – knitted together social relations and established kinship networks across medieval France. An active reformer amidst the Investiture Controversy, Ivo is best known today for his lively and compelling correspondence. This article, however, argues that Ivo should also be remembered for the carved ivories in his possession. At least three ivories from the late eleventh century (although two are now lost) can be associated with Ivo: (...) a comb, a set of tablets (probably a diptych), and his crosier, which is now in Florence’s Bargello Museum. Interweaving Ivo’s written reflections on the role of ivory objects in his life as reformer, bishop, politician, and friend, the essay further traces the history of Ivo’s crosier as it was passed to following generations of reform-minded canons. Résumé Le microcrédit, en Inde comme ailleurs, a été présenté ces dernières années comme un outil d’éradication de la pauvreté, permettant d’abolir des formes d’endettement informelles asservissantes, de soutenir la diffusion du capitalisme populaire et de promouvoir l’émancipation féminine. Plusieurs années de recherche en Inde rurale du Sud (Tamil Nadu) montrent que le microcrédit a surtout pour effet de renforcer une « démocratie de patronage ». La dette, sous toutes ses formes, reste un puissant moteur de paupérisation des travailleurs pauvres (...) mais aussi de construction des identités individuelles et collectives et de différentiation sociale.
